Photo Developing Glossary

Aspect Ratio

For example, if a graphic has an aspect ratio of 4:3 or display resolution 800x600, it means that the width is 1.33 as large as the height. When resizing graphics, it is important to maintain the aspect ratio to avoid stretching the graphic out of proportion. If the graphic is 4x6", since 6 divided by 4 equals 1.5, so a 4 inch print needs to be 6 inches long to portray the whole image.

Border

see White Border.

C-Print

is a negative-to-positive traditional photographic enlargement.

Color Enhancement

Many pictures are poorly taken. Color enhancemnet boosts overall and local contrast, recovers details both in the shadows and in the highlights, restores white balance failure of the digital camera and enhances skin tones, vegetation and sky.

Color Data Mode / Color Format

RGB, CMYK or Grayscale.

Color Profile

A representation of the color properties of a device; working color space. Today, virtually all profiles conform to the ICC specification.

Contrast

The difference in brightness between the lightest and darkest parts of the prints. Contrast is affected by the subject brightness, lighting, film type degree of development, the grade and surface of the printing paper, and the type of enlarger head used.

CMYK

Short for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black.

CMYK & RGB

Crop (Cropping)

To trim the edges of an image.

Density

The relative amount of darkness in various areas of photo.

Digital size

refers to prints size of 4x5.3" and 30x40".

Download

The term is often used to describe the process of copying a file or PEphoto software from an online server to one's own computer.

DPI

Short of Dots Per Inch, which indicates the resolution of images. PEphoto recommends 300 DPI for all online digital prints.

E surface

Kodak Lustre finish, available in Kodak Supra Endura and Edge photographic paper.

Enlargement

refers to prints size of 8x10" up to 50x165".

F surface

Kodak Glossy finish, available in Kodak Supra Endura and Edge photographic paper.

File Type

see Image Format.

File Size

The amount of computer storage space a file requires; usually measured in kilobytes (K) or megabytes (M / MB). An image file that is 5 x 7 inches, 24-bit color, resolution 300dpi, is around 1M in size. Right click image for the menu list, then go to properities to view file size.

Fill In

This is a standard practice in the photo finishing industry, due to differences between the shape of most digital images (4x5.3") and the shape of standard print sizes (like 4x6", 5x7", and 8x10").

The height and width of most digital images differs from the height and width of the print sizes we offer. Most digital cameras produce images that are slightly squarer than a 4x6, that they fit better onto computer monitors, but more rectangular than an 8x10. This makes it impossible to print the entire image without cropping it (Fill in) or padding it with a white border (Fit in).

Glossy

Describes a printing paper with a great deal of surface sheen, look sharp, vibrant and more like a traditional photograph. Handling of glossy paper is important as the paper can quickly and easily be marred by fingerprints and dirt.

Grayscale

An image type that contains more than just black and white, and includes actual shades of gray. In a grayscale image, each pixel has more bits of information encoded in it, allowing more shades to be recorded and shown. 4 bits are needed to reproduce up to 16 levels of gray, and 8 bits can reproduce a photo-realistic 256 shades of gray.

Head Swapping

The act of removing the head from someone and replacing it with a different one.

Highlights

The whitest or brightest part of an image; the opposite of shadows.

Image Format

Some of the most common used formats are TIFF, BMP, GIF and JPEG. PEphoto only accept JPEG or TIFF formats in RGB for order.

Ink-jet Printer

A type of non impact printing technology printer where ink droplets are propelled at the paper to form characters or graphics. Ink-jet printers are capable of producing high quality print approaching that produced by laser printers.

Lamination

To cover or overlay with laminae.

Laser Printer

A type of printer that utilizes a laser beam to produce an image on a drum. The light of the laser alters the electrical charge on the drum wherever it hits. The drum is then rolled through a reservoir of toner, which is picked up by the charged portions of the drum. Finally, the toner is transferred to the paper through a combination of heat and pressure.

Led Printer

A type of printer that using leds (light-emitting diodes) rather than a laser to create the electrostatic charge on the drum.

Lustre

Describes a printing paper often considered the finish between matte and glossy, and has a slight gloss with a subtle pearl-like texture. At PEphoto, we use Lustre as matte.

Matte

Describes a printing paper with nice quality prints but does not have that vibrant color finish. Matte paper is not vulnerable to being marred by fingerprints and it produces a non-glare photo.

Megapixel

One million pixels. The term is used in reference to the resolution of a camera.

Metallic

Paper coated with a thin solution of lime, whose color and gloss simulate metal. Its glossy finish and metallic appearance create images with exceptional visual interest and depth that will appeal to both photographers and display designers seeking a unique look.

Minilab

A digital minilab is a computer printer that uses traditional chemical photographic processes to make prints of digital images. Photographs are input to the digital minilab using a built-in film scanner that captures images from negative and positive photographic films (including mounted slides).

Mounting

Mounting is the technique used to secure a photograph to a 3/16" or 1/2" foam-cor boards. A dry-mounting press provides both pressure and heat, for mounting a photograph on a support, using a tissue coated with heat-softenable adhesive.

N surface

Kodak Matte finish, available in Kodak Supra Endura photographic paper.

Panoramic Photos

Panoramic photos is a format of photo that captures images with elongated fields of view. The term has also refers to a photo that is cropped to a relatively wide aspect ratio. While there is no formal definition for the point at which “wide–angle” leaves off and “panoramic” begins, an image that presents a field of view comparable to, or greater than, that of the human eye – about 160° by 75° – can be termed panoramic. The resulting images often, but not necessarily, take the form of a wide strip.

Paper Weight

Paper "weight" is usually measured by the caliper thickness of the paper. The thickness of Kodak professional Supra Endure enlargerment lustre/matte paper is 8.98 mils, glossy paper is 8.88 mils, and metallic paper is 9.06 mils. The thickness of Kodak Edge lustre/matte paper is 8.1 mils and glossy paper is 8.23 mils.

PEphoto

Photo Experts photo. PEphoto is also known as PE photo, PE photos, P E photo.

Photo Collage

Photo collage is a composition of combined with original artwork attached to various backgroud.

Photo Mosaics

Photo Mosaics are pictures made up of many smaller pictures. The small tile images can be seen up close, but at a distance, an entirely different image can be seen.

Pixel

A pixel is a single point in a graphic image.

Points

A new shipping points table was introduced by PEphoto desktop version software ROES. By multiply the "product points" times the number of each item you have ordered to calculate the shipping cost.

PPI

A realtionship bewteen megapixels and the number of horizontal and vertical pixels in the images or the number of pixels contained within one square inch of print. In the case of 3.9 megapixel (2272x1704) camera and 300-ppi printer, divide the number of pixels in the photo by the PPI to determne the size of the printed photo in inches 2272 / 300 = 7.57 and 1704 / 254 = 5.68.

Red Eyes

The red-eye effect in photography is the common appearance of red eyes on photographs taken with a photographic flash when the flash is too close to the lens.

ROES

ROES stands for Remote Order Entry System.

Resolution

Refers to the sharpness and clarity of an image. The higher the number, the clearer you photo. The number of the pixels determiones the resolution. In the case of dot-matrixand laser printers, the resolution indicates the number of dots per inch. For example, a 300-dpi (dots per inch) printer is one that is capable of printing 300 distinct dots in a line 1 inch long. This means it can print 90,000 dots per square inch.

Retouching

the process of altering a photo or an image, usually to remove imperfections, such as spots, stains, and other flaws.

RGB

Short for Red, Green, Blue.

Shadows

A term that refers to the amount of detail contained in the dark parts of an image. It is desirable to maintain shadow detail but there is a risk of decreasing overall contrast if one lightens the shadow too much in an attempt to expose detail.

Skin tones

(Magenta - Default - Yellow)

Sky

(Cyan - Default - Blue)

Spot Healing

A way to remove flaws - such as dust spots, lines, and cracks - from your images.

Upload

To transmit data from a computer to a server or network. For example, when you use the PEphoto uploader to develop digital pictures, you must upload the files from your PC to the internet (server).

Vegetation

(Yellow - Default - Cyan)

White Balance

The perceived color of an object is affected by the color of the lighting under which it is viewed. The human brain is able to detect and compensate for such changes in perceived color. As a result, a white object will look white to humans whether viewed in sunlight or under overcast skies, or indoors under incandescent or fluorescent lighting. A digital camera must emulate the human brain and adjust colors accordingly to lighting so that colors appear white when viewed directly also appear white in the final photograph. This adjustment is called “White Balance”.

White Border

Fit in white border: most digital cameras produce images that are slightly squarer than a 4x6, that they fit better onto computer monitors, but more rectangular than an 8x10. This makes it impossible to print the entire image without cropping it or padding it with a white border down either side..

White border around the edge: If you wish to have an 4x6 print with a 1/4 inches border, then we have to crop the print accordingly, the image size will become 3.5x5.5 inches.

Working Space

Default working space is sRGB / Adobe RGB
